Along with the increasing availability of exotic pets online, there are people who need a way to display exotic pets. Anyone can put a reptile in an empty fish tank, but is that really worthy of your exotic pet and how do you want to present it to the world? Let’s face it, you probably purchased an exotic pet online or elsewhere, because at least part of you wants to be different from everyone else. So why should your pet exhibit be the same one everyone else already has?

Granted, you can buy a secondhand aquarium and dump your iguana or python in there without any real concern for its health or safety. Still, something is simply missing when it comes to the way most people choose to display their exotic pets. An aquarium, as convenient as it is, may not be the way to go.

Hinges cost very little, and some people already have some in their garage or in a spare parts drawer somewhere in their house. Screen mesh is purchased cheaply at any hardware store and mixed with a piece of plywood and a couple of one by two inch straight pieces of wood and you have all the ingredients for a custom screen for your exotic animals.

Making the entire housing structure for your pet out of plywood is never a good idea for a display. This will actually defeat the whole purpose, as people won’t be able to see their newly acquired exotic pets. Make at least one side of the frame and the top with the small wood and wire mesh. This way, people will be able to see the exotic pet inside.

If you want to make your exotic pet cage even nicer, you can always stain the exterior and round the edges for a more visually pleasing exotic pet cage exterior. Do not stain or varnish the interior, as the varnish can crack and possibly kill your exotics.

For more visual effects, you can add paintings or posters to the back of the exotic animal’s cage. Desert pictures work great for iguanas and while they may or may not make the iguana feel better, they will be much more attractive to the human eye. For pythons or boa constrictors, try using a wooded river scene or something else with lots of green. Again, your pets’ actual reaction may not be noticeable, but it will certainly give your friends and visitors something to talk about when they come over to your home.

How big you build can depend on many factors, such as how much work you’re willing to put into it, how much money you have for parts, and how fancy you want to make what you have. Your biggest concern, however, should be that your new exotic animal exhibit is placed where people can see it and where it doesn’t have to be moved around a lot.

With the increasing popularity of finding exotic pets online, make sure you have something that is as unique as you are. If you have an exotic pet, you probably want to be different and even a little better, and that doesn’t mean throwing an iguana into a secondhand aquarium.
