Let’s face it, the market is exploding! And as people get desperate, they get, well… desperate. However, there are certain guidelines that you must adhere to before entrusting a resume company with your only tool of business.

1. DON’T BE FOOLED BY A NAME: A name is nothing more than what it says it is. Anyone can register a domain with the name lawyer, lawyers, Esq. etc., but that does NOT mean that they have no idea, nor experience, in writing resumes for lawyers.

2. USE A CERTIFIED ATTORNEY WRITER: You are a lawyer. You went to law school, learned legalese, and have specialized skills. With that being said, do you really want a 22 year old college grad with an AA degree to be hired at $10 an hour to write your resume? Most of these “freelance writers” are part-timers with only a minimal amount of resume writing experience, if any. Bottom line: these inexperienced writers will kill your resume and ruin your career. Why would you entrust your resume to someone other than a certified professional resume writer who is also a licensed attorney?

3. Be sure to do your homework: Ask your writer a few questions. See if they know IRAC, how to spell trial, if they understand the nuances between corporate counsel, general counsel, in-house counsel, etc.

4. Don’t Be Fooled: More specifically, don’t be fooled by resume companies that advertise that they “focus” or have “experience” on attorney and attorney resumes, but do not have certified professional resume writers/certified resume writers. in template. Don’t be fooled by recruiters or resume writers who claim to have the experience to write your attorney resume, when they clearly do not.

5. Do the editors really know what you do? Writers from these other agencies may have experience writing resumes for various types of professionals, but YOU are a LAWYER. Please make sure your assigned writer is experienced and certified preparing resumes for attorneys, law students, and other legal professionals before shelling out hundreds of dollars.
